It is believed that there was an earlier church on this site dating from 1120.

The spire of the church was damaged in a storm during 1703.

Inside the church is a late 15th century alabaster tomb of John Harington, 4th Baron Harington(1384–1418) and his wife Elizabeth Courtenay(died 1471).
