What started as a simple site with a few photographs of churches, changed beyond recognition when I accessed the Places of Worship data that the Ordnance Survey (OS) released as part of their Open Data. This gave me 22,000 points on a map where a church or other place of worship is. The next step was to put place names to the points on the map. OS data was used here as well but every point was manually checked as well. With this nearing completion, the next step is being undertaken. Putting a church name to each place on the map as well as trying to root out all the modern buildings and remove them from the site. Whilst a lot of work has been done in this respect there is still a huge amount left to do. Also the OS data was not complete and so far we've added about 1,000 churches that was not on their database. Gathering information and photos on each church has also started in earnest and I hope that you'll find the time to help us. Please see the 'How you can help' link on top of the menu.
However the most important thing you can do is to go out and visit historic churches and enjoy their beauty and history.
