At the end of 1943 the village of Tyneham and 7,500 acres of surrounding the village were commandeered by the War Office, for use as firing ranges for training troops. The 252 people displaced were told the Army placed a compulsory purchase order on the land and it has remained in use for military training ever since. It was not until 1975 that the MoD began opening the village during weekends August after many complaints from tourists and locals alike. The church is now a museum.
