Reading a book on great churches in England and it referenced this church at Dorchester. So next time I was passing I had to divert off the A34 and pop in. Nice quiet vilage. Couple of pubs, a hotel and a little shop. So I came look at a nice church, which I did, but did not realise the history of the place. Nor did I realise that this was an Abbey Church.

In 635 the great Christian King, Oswald of Northumbria met Pagan King Cynegils of Wessex near to Dorchester to celebrate the marriage proposal of Cynegils daughter to Oswald and the baptism of Cynegils by Bishop (Later Saint) Birinus. Birinus built several church in the area and this Abbey church stands of the site of the original Saxon Cathedral.
